There are two primary methods to evaluate for SIBO:

  1. Direct aspiration and culture of small intestine fluid – considered the most reliable method, but it is an invasive and c costly, thus not frequently used in clinical practice.

  2. Breath testing for hydrogen and methane after ingesting a carbohydrate solution – a non-invasive and cost-effective method, thus most frequently used. However, it's important to note the caveats of breath testing. False positives can occur, and dietary factors or other gastrointestinal conditions can influence the results, thus the importance to work with a professional healthcare.
